With the Recent release of 4.4.3 and yesterdays release of 4.4.4 for Nexus devices, all of you Nexus 5 owners running fully stock software will be getting a notification to apply the patch soon, but what about those of us with rooted phones?

The over-the-air update that comes directly from Google will not install on a rooted phone. The script that it uses to patch your OS to the newer version performs a check that will abort installation if any changes to the system partition are detected. And since the Superuser binaries are installed on the system partition, rooted phones cannot pass this checkpoint.

Is Google+ the Walking Dead???

Posted by Ken S. on April 24, 2014 in Android, General Tech, Google |

Google+ Is Walking Dead

Today, Google’s Vic Gundotra announced that he would be leaving the company after eight years. The first obvious question is where this leaves Google+, Gundotra’s baby and primary project for the past several of those years.

What we’re hearing from multiple sources is that Google+ will no longer be considered a product, but a platform — essentially ending its competition with other social networks like Facebook and Twitter.

A Google representative has vehemently denied these claims. “Today’s news has no impact on our Google+ strategy — we have an incredibly talented team that will continue to build great user experiences across Google+, Hangouts and Photos.”

Nexus 5 review: the best phone $350 can buy

Posted by Ken S. on November 5, 2013 in Android, Google, Smart Phones |

DNP Nexus 5 review

When you’re shopping for a smartphone, what do you expect to get for less than $400 without a contract? Certainly not a top-of-the-line device, right? Until recently, that kind of price has been reserved for devices that were mid-range at best, or entry-level at worst. Ever since the gorgeous and powerful Nexus 4 came out last year for $300 on the Play Store, however, it’s been clear Google is trying to give the high-end, $600-plus Android flagships a run for their money. Now the company’s back with the Nexus 5, a power user’s dream that sells for $350 and features some of the same specs you’d expect to see in a top-shelf device.

Posted by Ken S. on May 5, 2012 in Google |

After the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) concluded that Google violated Internet privacy standards in the way that it interacted with Apple’s Safari Web browser, the question is now how much the search giant will have to pay in fines. Based on the huge number of individual instances of privacy violations, Google could technically be forced to fork over millions and millions of dollars.

Google setting up high-speed fiber TV and web service

Posted by Ken S. on February 22, 2012 in General Tech, Google |

Here in the United States its becoming more and more evident that Google is preparing for a big product, one that not only brings hard-wired internet to your home, but brings you the streaming web you’ve grown accustomed to as well via Fiber. Google has been busy with the FCC lately, most recently (this week) seeking approval from the group to launch a video service over the fiber network it’s already begun building in Kansas City. This service (perhaps only in a limited form) could very well be launching inside the next two months.

Google Doodle Honors Jim Henson and Friendly Monsters

Posted by Ken S. on September 24, 2011 in Google |

Saturday marks what would have been the 75th birthday of Jim Henson, the puppet pioneer and beloved conductor of many a fuzzy childhood friend, from Big Bird to the Cookie Monster. In his honor, today’s Google Doodle, which represents the company logo on the search engine’s home page, is an interactive puppet show, designed by Google and the Jim Henson Company.

Here’s a video from those two companies describing their collaboration on the doodle, as well as the prolific puppeteer’s creative process.

Google Could Get a Chance to Buy T-Mobile After It Closes Motorola Deal?

Posted by Ken S. on August 21, 2011 in General Tech, Google, T-Mobile |

Imagine the world a year from now—August 2012—and the attempt by AT&T to buy T-Mobile is clearly doomed. The FCC still hasn’t decided to approve the license transfer, the DOJ is still asking difficult antitrust questions, lawsuit after lawsuit is piling up, and AT&T shareholders are getting restless. T-Mobile, meanwhile is still hanging in there in merger purgatory. Even AT&T’s lust to bring back Ma Bell is starting to wear thin. Obviously, something has got to give.

With the Videos app, available in Android Market, there’s no more waiting for downloads, syncing, or worrying about storage space. Simply sign into Android Market with your Google account, and you can rent movies from anywhere – the web, or your Android phone or tablet – and start watching instantly. You can also download movies to your device so they’re available for viewing when you don’t have an internet connection.
