How To Manually Update to Froyo!

Posted by Ken S. on October 24, 2010 in Android, T-Mobile |
Guys, I did it!, As Most of you probably already know, T-Mobile is releasing an update for the original MyTouch, called Froyo or Android v2.2.1. With the help of the people over at XDA, I managed to sucessfully manually update my MT3G 1.0 to Froyo.  For the longest time, the big problem was that they knew what the link was for the DMD64 to FRG83 file, but not the HBOOT image file.  Cause as we’re all aware, the update comes in 2 parts, a smaller update, then a bigger one.  We had the 2nd part but not the first.  Now we have it!  Here’s what I did, starting from stock 1.6 (DMD64):

Download this file:

http://android.clients.google.com/packages/ota/tmobile_opal/894fb8631db9.hboot-1.33.0013.opal.zip – Link may be removed

That is the HBOOT image and is the first part of the patch.  Download and save that on your computer.  Next download this:

http://android.clients.google.com/packages/ota/tmobile_opal/e3671133717d.signed-opal-FRG83-from-DMD6… – Link may be removed

That is the second part of the update and is the actual update to Froyo.  Download that and save that on your computer.

Next, just to be sure, BACK UP ALL YOUR DATA and make sure you know all your passwords!  Do a factory reset on your phone.

Once that’s done and you’re back into your phone, copy the first file you downloaded (the HBOOT image file) to your SD card on the phone in the root directory of the SD card (not inside any subfolder), and rename it to update.zip.  Make sure you name it update.zip not anything else or it won’t work.

Turn your phone off.

Hold down the Home key and the power button and hold them both down while the phone powers up until you see a screen that has a yellow triangle with an exclamation point in it and a picture of the phone next to it.  Once you see that screen, press Home and power once again.  This will bring you to the recovery screen.  You will see an option that says Apply update.zip from SD card.  Use the trackball to scroll down to it and click it.  It will then install the HBOOT update.  The phone will reboot a few times during the process.  Don’t interrupt it!  Once it’s done, it’ll boot back into the 1.6 desktop.  Part 1 of the update is now complete!

Now delete the previous update.zip file from earlier in the process from the SD card.  Now, copy the 2nd file you downloaded to the SD card in the root directory and rename it update.zip.

Turn off your phone.

It will then install the actual Froyo update.  Again, the phone will reboot several times during the process.  Don’t interrupt it!  Once it’s done, it’ll boot back up and you will now be running Froyo!

I recommend also doing another factory reset after the phone is fully updated… just to be sure (it’s what I did).  Enjoy, everyone!

~~UPDATE: I just want to add one thing, from this post, after installing Froyo I experienced severe battery drain, I was not able to get more than five hours from a single battery charge, I tracked it down to the phone not going to sleep when not being used. Please keep this in mind if you decide to go ahead with this. Oh there is nothing wrong with the file my phone also had same issue after getting the OTA of Froyo from T-Mobile. ~~
