T-Mobile G2 OTA Rolling Out, Brings WiFi Calling?

Posted by Ken S. on October 13, 2010 in Android, Smart Phones |

Well that was quick! Just six days after its official launch, there have been reports of a T-Mobile G2 OTA update rolling out this morning. The update is the G2′s first OTA update which reportedly enables WiFi-Calling (surprise, suprise) Mobile hotspot creation, update to the radio code (which will hopefully rectify the reception issues I’ve been having), and includes a few other fixes. We’ve yet to recieve the update on our T-Mobile G2, but if you’ve recieved the update drop us a line in the comments!

T-Mobile in talks with Clearwire to fund its operations and buildout

T-Mobile in talks with Clearwire to fund its operations and buildout

A report out of Reuters today confirms that T-Mobile is in talks with Clearwire to become a strategic partner that would allow them to rent wireless network space at a special wholesale rate and help fund Clearwire’s network buildout.

Clearwire runs the WiMAX network that powers Sprint 4G, but they will begin testing several LTE technologies this fall. T-Mobile is currently building out their HSPA+ network and plans to hit speeds of 42 Mbps next year, but they are hurting when it comes to the wireless spectrum needed for a true 4G network. Clearwire just happens to own more spectrum than anyone else right now and recently boasted they could deliver real-world download speeds that were faster than any carrier’s future 4G network.

Turn a Pogoplug into a Fully-Featured Linux Web Server

Posted by Ken S. on September 25, 2010 in Linux |

Turn a Pogoplug into a Fully-Featured Linux Web Server Pogoplugs are great little storage devices, but they can do more than they let on. Let’s take a look at how you can hack a Pogoplug into a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) web server.

This is a fun little project, but it does take some time and patience. Be sure to set aside a few hours this weekend to get it up and running. That said, let’s get started!

The video above will take you through the entire process, which is mostly based on the great tutorials at plugapps.com. The video won’t cover backing up your Pogoplug, which is something you should probably do, and also how to install NginX in place of Apache.

Get error 500 in xmlrpc.php file while using Windows Live Writer with WordPress

Posted by Ken S. on September 17, 2010 in General Tech, Internet |

I just installed Windows Live Writer and while not a big fan of Windows Live products I wanted to give this program a try, as I figured it would make adding to my Blog a lot easier.

I must say it took some time to get the settings up and working, I kept getting an error “there was error 500 while processing the file xmlrpc.php”. and when looking into it there was no xmlrpc.php file to speak of. In looking online I came across this nice little tip found on WebGuru’s Blog about Digital Life. – thanks mate.

T-Mobile G2 Keyboard Gets a Close-Up Revealing Quick Key Shortcuts

Posted by Ken S. on September 9, 2010 in Android, Smart Phones |

g2-quick-keys

Given that the internals of the upcoming T-Mobile G2 don’t place the HSPA+ handset well ahead of the competition, the phone has three main selling points. One is, well, the HSPA+ support, while the other two would be the stock version of Android 2.2 it runs and a pretty nice hardware keyboard. And that hardware keyboard is exactly what we are looking at here in close-up, giving us a better idea of its layout including a set of three Quick Keys. What are Quick Keys? They will be used to “quickly access super useful Google shortcuts and other applications that may take multiple steps to access.”

Google Introduces Instant Search

Posted by Ken S. on September 9, 2010 in General Tech |

Just a day shy of Google saying the next step in search is automatic, Google’s gone ahead and announced Instant search. The idea here is that – as you type – results will come up before you even have to press enter. I didn’t quite get what Eric Schmidt meant the other day when he quickly touched on this next step, but it’s quite apparent now.

Did you know:

  • Before Google Instant, the typical searcher took more than 9 seconds to enter a search term, and we saw many examples of searches that took 30-90 seconds to type.

HTC Home Brings the HTC Weather Widget to Windows 7

Posted by Ken S. on September 1, 2010 in General Tech |

Windows: If you’re sporting an HTC phone with the HTC user interface you may have grown fond of the combination clock and weather forecasting widget. HTC Home ports the HTC interface from your phone to your Windows desktop, complete with animations.

HTC Home is a port of the popular weather/clock widget from the HTC Sense UI interface found on Android phones—and related to similar HTC UIs found on other smart phones. You can resize the widget, tuck it in the taskbar, toggle the animations on and off, and easily switch which locale the forecast is reporting.
